Untitled (Big Blue), 2002

Oil and oil stick on canvas, 72 x 54 inches.

This was painted in my last apartment in Brooklyn near the very end of my 5 years as a student at the Art Students League of New York.  It was a piece that grew very organically with a lot of time spent observing it in different light conditions, meditating upon it, learning more and more to be guided by the painting as much as to encourage its direction.

Figure here based on one of my very best friends and a true guide for me during my time in NYC and at the Art Students League.  A very gentle man.  Nevertheless, his great form was used by me in this cathartic series of paintings influenced quite highly by Odd Nerdrum at the time, and as a vehicle for my spiritual explorations and symbolic painting language.

This painting and all of these with the strongly demarked visual borders related to a symbolic language I was exploring at the time.  The morphed pictogram-like visual transformation relates to the desire to go from a more 'Flatland' environment into something or somewhere with more form and meaning.  The 'babies' at this time were more symbols of fresh vision and experience that literal new human forms.

This with the image beside this show a total of 21 of the 22 piece series of Lucky Kats that was created on a trip back to NYC while I was living in Toronto.  They were conceived of as sitting meditators as much as deviations from symbolic porecelain feline figurines as icons for bringing customers and luck into Korean corner stores, Japanese restaurants, and living spaces.

Paul Logerfo was a wonderful man and a groundbreaking surgeon in the field of oncology.  I am forever grateful to have had him and Kristin Logerfo as friends and strong supporters of my work during my days in New York City.  Paul will be forever missed but remembered.
